Somalia PM Received a Vote of Confidence

Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org)-MPs in the interim Parliament of Somalia gave a vote of confidence to Prime Minister Nuur Hasan Husein’s government in meeting held in Transitional Federal Government’s (TFG) temporary base in Baidoa. This is a significant development given that the President and the Prime Minister of the interim government have been feuding recently.

The vote, however, did not go smoothly and without incidences. Before the vote was taken, a commotion erupted regarding the process of voting, i.e., whether it should be a secret ballot or show of hands. At the end it was agreed to vote by show of hands.

Differences between the faction that supports President Yusuf and the one that supports Prime Minister Nuur Ade were apparent. It is noteworthy that several members who proposed the motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister’s government walked out of the meeting in protest to the way meeting was chaired.

Out of the 200 MPs who were present, a resounding 191 MPs voted in support of the Prime Minister’s government while only 7 MPs voted against it and two abstained.

After winning a vote of confidence from the overwhelming majority of MPs, the Prime Minister gave an interview to the BBC’s Somali Service and said that he is very pleased with the support he received from MPs and that he is encouraged to continue the work he is doing for the country.

The Prime Minister added that ahead of the vote, he asked the MPs to correct him if he is on the wrong course and to support him if he is doing the right things.
